A Dreamy Beach Engagement at Saugatuck Dunes
Carefree Romance at the Dunes | Rita & Zach’s Engagement Session at Saugatuck Dunes State Park
Over Memorial Day weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Rita and Zach’s engagement session at one of Michigan’s most breathtaking hidden gems: Saugatuck Dunes State Park. Despite it being a holiday weekend, we were surprised to find the trails and beach nearly empty — it felt like the entire place was waiting just for us.
The Trail to the Dunes
We began our session at the edge of the forest where the trees meet the sand — a peaceful, winding trail that gradually opens up to sweeping views of Lake Michigan. Soft sunlight filtered through the trees, the breeze was light, and the colors of the dunes and water seemed to glow.
As we made our way through the woods and onto the dunes, I got to know Rita and Zach even more. They were warm, down-to-earth, and totally open — the kind of couple that makes my job feel like a joy rather than work. We discovered a few personal connections that instantly made the session feel more like spending time with old friends. That ease between us really set the tone for the evening.
From the start, they were convinced they’d be awkward in front of the camera — but the truth was the opposite. They were playful, affectionate, and completely at home with one another. What stood out most was how genuine they were. They weren’t afraid to laugh, be silly, or fully lean into quiet, intimate moments. The result? A session that felt natural, joyful, and deeply connected.
Sunset on the Shoreline
We explored the rolling dunes, surrounded by soft dune grass and the kind of wind-twisted trees that seem to belong only to the lakeshore. As the sun dipped lower, we made our way down to the beach and ended the evening wading into the water — which, to our surprise, wasn’t nearly as cold as we expected! The sunset lit up the sky in a golden haze, and the reflections on the water made for some truly breathtaking final images.
A Session to Remember
From forest paths to sandy shorelines, Rita and Zach’s session was full of movement, emotion, and so many magical “wow” moments. It was the kind of evening that reminds me why I love coastal sessions so much — the light, the textures, the freedom of space, and the way couples come alive in it all. This location in particular is quickly becoming one of my favorites, and I’m already dreaming of returning with more couples who are drawn to this wild, romantic landscape.
I am so grateful to Rita and Zach for trusting me with this part of their story. I cannot wait to see them again in Grand Rapids on their wedding day!

It all begins with an idea.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
